# How to Authorize and Capture a Credit Card Payment

## How to place an authorization hold on a customer's card from a reservation or rental agreement and then capture it as a payment in RentWorks+.

##### Open the reservation

**1.** From the sidebar, select **Reservations** or **Rental Agreements** depending on where you are adding payment from.

**2.** Find the reservation or RA in the list and click its row to open it. Use the search bar to look up a reservation by ID, customer name, or vehicle.

**3.** Once a reservation or agreement has been selected, click **Edit** to begin making changes to it.

##### Open the Add Deposit dialog

**4.** During editing, go down to the **Payments** section in the summary panel on the right. It shows the total collected so far, the **Required deposit** for the reservation and how much of it remains alongside the **Add Deposit** button.

**Deposit vs. payment:** A **deposit** is money collected in advance and held against the reservation, such as a security deposit or prepayment. It is applied toward the final charges when the rental agreement is closed. A **payment** settles the charges on the rental agreement itself. Money collected from a reservation is recorded as a deposit.

**5.** Click **Add Deposit**.

##### Select the payment type

**6.** The **Add Deposit** dialog shows the outstanding balance. Click the **Payment Type** dropdown and select **CC** to take a credit card payment.

**7.** With **CC** selected, the dialog shows the card **Gateway** (e.g. Adyen) and card options. Cards already saved for the customer appear under **Saved cards**.

##### Choose the transaction type

**8.** The **Transaction Type** controls whether the card is only authorized or charged. Leave **Paid** unchecked to take an authorization only.

Check **Paid** to take a payment instead, without putting a hold on the funds first.

**Authorization vs. payment:** Authorization (auth hold) reserves funds on the customer's card without collecting them. The hold can be captured later. A **payment** collects the money right away.

##### Enter the amount

**9.** Enter the **Amount** to authorize. This example uses $1.00 as a test.

##### Enter the card details

**10.** Under **Payment Method**, choose how to take the card. Select **Use Terminal** to have the customer tap, insert, or swipe their card on a card terminal, or **Enter Card** to type the card details manually. For this example, click **Enter Card**.

**11.** Enter the customer's card information in the **Card number**, **Expiry date**, **Security code**, and **Name on card** fields.

##### Authorize the card

**12.** Once all card fields are complete, click **Authorize**. The button shows the amount being authorized (e.g. **Authorize $1.00**).

**13.** The **Save Card** prompt appears. Click **Save to** *customer name* to save the card to the customer, **Save to Reservation** to save it to this reservation, or **No Thanks** to skip saving it. For this example, click **Save to Reservation**.

##### Review the authorization hold

**14.** Back on the edit reservation screen, expand the **Payments** section in the summary panel. The new card transaction is listed with an orange **Auth Hold** label.

##### Capture the authorization

**15.** To collect the held funds, click **Add Deposit** again. Pending holds are listed in yellow at the top of the dialog under **Authorization holds**.

**16.** Click the hold to expand it. Confirm the **Capture amount**. You can capture up to the held amount. Click **Capture**. Use **Adjust** to change the hold, or **Void** to release it without collecting the money.

**17.** A confirmation message appears (e.g. *Auth-hold of $1.00 captured*). In the **Payments** section, the transaction now shows a blue **Deposit** label and a **Paid** date instead of **Auth Hold**, which confirms the payment has been captured.
